UPDATE! – If you would like to purchase a PDF compilation of the entire Layer Cake Sampler tutorial instructions, you can find that in my shop here.

I am so happy to announce my first quilt along at Material Girl Quilts!Β  I hope you will join me as we choose our favorite layer cakes to create the Layer Cake Sampler Quilt.

For this quilt, we will be using 2 layer cakes to make twenty 16″ finished blocks (one print layer cake and one solid).Β  I have already finished a quilt using layout option #1 (shown below).

Layout Option #1:

  • Finished Size:Β  80” x 98”
  • Fabric Requirements:
    • 1 print layer cake (blocks)
    • 1 solid layer cake or 3 yards cut into 40 – 10” squares (blocks)
    • 1 ΒΎ yard solid for sashing (cut carefully, there is very little extra)
    • ΒΌ yard or fat quarter for cornerstone squares
    • 1 yard for border
    • ΒΎ yard for binding
    • 6 yards for backing

Here is layout option #2 which is what I’ll be working on during the quilt along.Β  It has 16 of the 2o blocks on the front and I plan to use 4 of my blocks pieced into the back.

  • Finished Size:Β  79 ½” x 79 ½”
  • Fabric Requirements:
    • 1 print layer cake (blocks)
    • 1 solid layer cake or 3 yards cut into 40 – 10” squares (blocks)
    • 2 yards solid for sashing/borders (cut carefully, there is very little extra)
    • ΒΎ yard for binding
    • 5 yards for backing

  1. I will be very happy to join your Quilt Along. I like your sampler blocks and I like the darker background & smaller size of your QA example. The Chance of Flowers prize fabric is pretty & happy. I would love to be the winner of your & Moda’s generous giveaway! Thank you.

  2. I too would like to join! How will we get the pattern information. So fun to quilt and possible win a prize. Sew much fun! Please send details…..thank you

  3. I’m having a blast with this quilt along! Never done one before and I’m hooked. Thank you for the easy yo understand directions!

  4. Ten blocks done and I am thoroughly enjoying this quilt-a-long. I love the way the blocks turn out perfectly square. I am using mostly purples and white on white.

  5. I just found your Quilt Along thru The Sewing Chick. Love this and will be making one!! Love your method of making many HST at once! I am a follower now.

  6. All my blocks are finished! Yippee! This is going to match perfectly in one of my 10 granddaughters bedroom. She is thrilled. I am having trouble finding a sashing that looks good. I found a scrap in my stash but can’t find any fabric that color. Have to keep looking. Kinda scared to order online. Will it match?

  7. I am just starting the quilt along. Won’t be finished by the deadline, but looking forward to the experience. Thank you for the patterns and the tutorial.

  8. I love the sampler quilt you’ve done. How can I get the pattern? This is exactly what I was looking for earlier in the year & have started one in a class & I’m not really happy with all the blocks and I’d be so grateful to use these.
    Cheers
