Heading South {a finished quilt and magazine publication!!}

UPDATEYou can now purchase this pattern in my shop here. —–

So, it’s been a pretty exciting week for me.  Last Friday I announced my calendar quilt and today I get to share another publication with you…somebody pinch me because I can hardly believe it!!  This is Heading South and it’s featured in this month’s issue of Love Patchwork & Quilting.  If you  haven’t checked out this fairly new quilting magazine, you really need to.  This is their 13th issue and I have to tell you that every issue I’ve seen to date is just beautiful.  The team working at LPQ really know what they are doing and put together a nice work of art each month.  Truly, I love to flip through this magazine over and over and be filled with inspiration.

One of my dreams for a while now has been to have a quilt published in a magazine and I am thrilled that my first magazine publication is this quilt.  It’s kind of funny how this quilt came about.  I had contacted LPQ with another quilt idea and struck up a pleasant conversation with Jenny (the editor).  She looked through my blog, loved my Happy Geese quilt and wondered if I would create a variation of that quilt into a more modern design and add in some negative space.  Well of course I said YES!  In fact, she may have heard me shouting and squealing all the way across the pond 🙂

Here is a detail shot from the magazine.  When Jenny sent me these photos of Heading South, I’ll be honest, a few happy tears fell.  The beautiful photos filled my heart to almost bursting when I realized that one of my dreams was coming true.

Seeing these photos makes me wish I had a nice photo studio with great lighting and a fancy camera to make ALL of my quilts look this good!!  But I will have to settle for shots like this (taken at dusk the night before shipping the quilt off to the magazine).

Heading South

For the quilting, I wanted to create “movement” to help these geese head south.  I drew a few organic curvy lines across the quilt top and used my Bernina walking foot along with my stand-by Aurifil 50 wt. 2021 thread to quilt them and then filled in the spaces in between leaving various widths between each line.  I think my plan worked, I can almost see this flock of geese taking to the skies…

If you purchase Issue 13 of Love Patchwork & Quilting, you will note that my quilt instructions leave you with 5 extra geese (one of each color).  I put those geese to good use in a pretty table topper shown below.  You can find the tutorial to make this table topper here.  (Again, another beautiful photo from LPQ).  Issue 13 goes on sale Sept. 17th, but subscribers receive their copy a bit early (starting today).

And check out the amazing cover quilt by Lynne of Lily’s Quilts…GORGEOUS!!  I think it’s even more beautiful spread across a bed (you’ll see that when you get your own copy!) 😉

Thanks again for all of your love and support the last couple of years, it has helped me to achieve one of my originally “lofty” goals…now to set some more!

  1. Your quilt is beautiful. Congratulations. I’m sure this is the first of many more of your quilts to be published. You are a very talented lady.

  2. The quilt and table topper look great! I love their photos – so clean and crisp looking (mostly because of the quilt) but I have to say, I really enjoy looking at your photo the best because it shows off the wonderful quilting. Great design! God is good. He takes our dreams and then goes places with them that we don’t even imagine. ENJOY!

  3. Congratulations on being published. I wish I had the confidence to even think about submitting any of my quilts even to the quilt show! I love the quilt and may have to add that one to my list of “someday” quilts. I also wish I could envision the quilting the way you do! Also, say hi to your mom for me. We were in Sunday school together before I moved south.

  4. Your Happy Geese quilt is very pretty…. But Heading South is such a great design! Love the modern feel brought on by the changes you made! I am sure they will be calling on you again…. Congratulations on the publication, Amanda!

  5. I love this quilt you’ve designed! The quilting is excellent too, so fitting. I haven’t been able to find the magazine yet in Australia, but will be keeping my eye out for one.
