Layer Cake Sampler {first quilt finish of 2014!}

Here it is…My finished Layer Cake Sampler quilt!

Layer Cake Sampler quilt

Thanks for all of the kind comments on my sneak peek last week 🙂  This quilt was so much fun to design and put together.  I have always loved half square triangles and all that you can do with them.  I think a sampler quilt is the perfect way to showcase that.  And what better way to create a awesome sampler than using a layer cake of a favorite fabric line?!

For this quilt I used a Moda Flats layer cake by Angela Yosten along with a Moda Bella layer cake in white for the blocks.

Each block consists of 2 print and 2 background layer cake squares and finishes at 16″.

My husband asked what my favorite block is and it’s too difficult to decide!  I love them all and I really love the colors in this fabric line together.  They are such great prints too.

For the quilting I used my favorite Aurifil 50 wt. #2021 thread and quilted a quick loopy meander all over the quilt.  I love the way it turned out and can’t wait to see it all crinkly after the first wash 🙂

Now, here is the very exciting news about this quilt…I’m going to host a quilt along and demonstrate how you can make your very own Layer Cake Sampler Quilt!!!  The full quilt along schedule will be posted on Friday (2/7/14) along with details for fabulous prizes available from Moda, Aurifil and Material Girl Quilts!

So, what do you think?  Would you like to quilt along with me?

I had to share one last photo with you.  We had yet ANOTHER snow day at our house with way too much snow on the ground for outdoor photos…so I had to improvise 😉  The light was pretty good in my sewing room, so I hung it up in there to get some photos of the entire quilt top.  And, it worked!  In this photo you can see my other sampler quilt made in 30’s reproduction fabrics (one of my all time favorites).

Thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you will join me in the quilt along.  Remember…details will be coming on Friday.

  1. I love this quilt and it looks fabulous on your bed. Count me in. I’ve not done a quilt-a-long before either but it sounds like fun. Looking forward to the details tomorrow.

  2. Love this quilt. The fabrics are great and love all the different looking blocks. Another great quilt. Good way to start the new year off.

  3. I would love to take part, Amanda the design is fantastic!! Love it! Love all the pinwheels and half square triangles. Looks amazing! Great work! But I’ve never done one of these quilt a long things. It’s the first traditional sampler, that I’ve really liked, of course the modern twist to the blocks and fabric is great.

  4. I love this! I have a Layer Cake featuring “Sweet Serenade” that this would be perfect for. Looking forward to the quilt along… I’ll be back Friday for details!

  5. Wow! Your quilt is beautiful!! I am relatively new to quilting and a sampler seems that it would be the perfect thing to get some practice. Thanks for the chance to win some great fabric.

  6. This should be fun! Have my fabrics. I am wondering how you cut the 6 yds of backing fabric. By my calculations I need 7 1/3 yds for the long arm and that is piecing from side to side, 3 pieces 88″ wide.

  7. I really like the pattern and would love to quilt with you. I am a little commitment phobic so we will see, but I would love to follow along with the quilting

  8. It turned out lovely Amanda, and so clever of you to work out how to get it out of a layer cake. I’m sure you’ll have lots sewing along with you. Unfortunately, I’ve got a huge pile of WIPs and to dos in front of me, so sewing along would be too far down the list for me to join in.

  9. I just found your blog and I am so glad I did! I will be doing the quilt along with you. I have to hurry and do the first two blocks. This is my first quilt along and I am really excited!!!!!
